Teaching with blogs: Review

I am energized to see that so many teachers are utilizing blogs in the classroom at the elementary level. It shows the far reach of technology. Even Kindergarteners are benefiting. I do not have immediate plans to start blogging with my five year-olds but I am optimistic that it can be done eventually. Also, my grade level are avid users of Scholastic books, and I subscribed regularly to the Scholastic News while a fifth grade teacher. The resources at Scholastic are very useful and align well with the curriculum. Furthermore, Time for Kids News is available for students as an alternative to scholastic. Also, the online site provides a feed of kids news produced by kids.

No issue is my important then protecting our children from harms way. Therefore, the safe blogging resources gives educators an opportunity to use blogging effectively without jeopardizing the safety of our children. The teachers clearly stated their blogging rules for their students.

The classroom blogs were different however they were focused on student learning. And student learning is the important matter. They included various resources throughout the blogs like blogmeister software. Nevertheless, the articles for establishing and maintaining your own blogs are meaningful. It gives us the opportunity to use blogging right away in a safe and effective manner.

Hi Kurtis,

I'm glad to see you enjoyed reading about the classroom uses of blogs.

You are right that you may not actually have your 5year olds blogging.

But, there are other ways you could use a blog in the classroom....some brainstorm ideas....connecting with parents...or you could find a blog that connects to a unit you're teaching. Once a day, you could read the blog to your students and then have them dictate a class response....perhaps as a part of morning circle time? Just a thought....let me know what you think!

It would be fun to post children's work to a blog for parents/grandparents. Sort of a what's going on in the classroom kind of blog.

I think Cheryl's suggestion about setting up a whole class blog is an interesting idea. I am not sure what kind of technology you have access to but if you can get a hold of a data projector and computer, you can project your blog and add some interactivity.

Exactly. Our blog can be used to communicate our morning message and/or the afternoon message. Each day students will take turns entering their own morning message. For example, Today is Monday, October 1. I can write my name.
